Teaching Exams After Graduation

For graduates aspiring to enter the teaching field, various exams at both state and national levels help assess and certify their qualifications. These exams are designed to ensure that candidates have the requisite knowledge and skills to teach effectively at different educational levels.

National-Level Teaching Exams

  1. Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET)

    • Conducted by: Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)
    • Eligibility: Graduation with a B.Ed or equivalent degree
    • Purpose: Qualifies candidates to teach in central government schools like Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas, as well as private schools.
  2. National Eligibility Test (NET)

    • Conducted by: National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of UGC
    • Eligibility: Post-graduation in relevant subject with at least 55% marks (50% for reserved categories)
    • Purpose: Determines eligibility for the role of Assistant Professor and for awarding Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in universities and colleges.
  3. State Teacher Eligibility Tests (TET)

    • Conducted by: Respective State Governments
    • Eligibility: Varies by state but generally requires graduation with a B.Ed degree
    • Purpose: Qualifies candidates to teach in state government schools and affiliated institutions.
  4. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)

    • Conducted by: Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and IITs
    • Eligibility: Graduation in Engineering/Technology or equivalent
    • Purpose: Though primarily for postgraduate engineering admissions, GATE scores are also used for recruitment of teachers in some technical institutions and for applying to M.Tech/Ph.D. programs.

State-Level Teaching Exams

  1. State Eligibility Test (SET)

    • Conducted by: Respective State Governments or Agencies
    • Eligibility: Post-graduation in relevant subject with at least 55% marks (50% for reserved categories)
    • Purpose: Determines eligibility for Assistant Professor positions within the respective state.
  2. Teacher Recruitment Board (TRB) Exams

    • Conducted by: Various state Teacher Recruitment Boards
    • Eligibility: Varies by state, typically requires a B.Ed or equivalent degree
    • Purpose: Recruitment of teachers for state government schools.
  3. Assistant Professor Exams (State Specific)

    • Conducted by: State Public Service Commissions (e.g., UPPSC, MPPSC)
    • Eligibility: Post-graduation in relevant subject
    • Purpose: Recruitment of Assistant Professors in state government colleges and universities.
  4. Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA)

    • Conducted by: Respective State Education Departments
    • Eligibility: Varies by position, generally requires a teaching degree (B.Ed, D.El.Ed)
    • Purpose: Recruitment for various teaching positions under the SSA program aimed at enhancing educational outcomes at the elementary and secondary levels.

NET for Assistant Professorship and/or JRF

The  National Testing Agency (NTA) is responsible for conducting examinations at the research level in university education. UGC is responsible for carrying our UGC NET and UGC NET CSIR exams for candidates willing to teach for the post of Assistant Professor and/or the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). SET for Assistant Professor

The State Eligibility Test (SET) are state level exams. TET Exams 2024: Exam Pattern

The TET exam pattern 2024 is similar for most of the exams that are conducted at the Central and State level. The TET exam is composed of two papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2. Candidates who wish to teach classes 1 to 5 will appear for Paper 1 while those who plan to trach classes 6 to 9 will appear for Paper 2.
